Help on the coldest night of the winter

posted 5 Feb 2012 05:04 by Richard Pitt

Hello,

I just wanted to say a big thank you to the lovely street pastors that got me home safely last night. I stupidly found myself alone in town with no money in the freezing cold. The pastors were so kind to help me get home, they do such brilliant work for the community and I would like you all to know its very much appreciated!

Thank you so much

[This was on Friday 3rd February, with temperatures down to -7C]

We don't always get to hear from the people we have helped - that's what its like, we help people in their moment of need and might never hear from them again.
I was re-charging one of our mobile phones this week and found a message from back in June "Thanks for taking care of my daughter last night".

Thanks for the flip flops (via facebook)

Moments of recklessness

posted 20 Jan 2011 02:52 by Richard Pitt   [ updated 20 Jan 2011 02:58 ]

I have just seen some sorry pictures on Facebook of my nephew’s birthday celebrations in Southampton.

We are supporters of our local Street Pastors and I want to thank you that you are on the photos comforting him. A great service.

Thankfully most of these kids get over their binge drinking as they mature but it’s so good that you are there for their moments of recklessness.

I couldn't remember where I lived

Hi,

Some of your street pastors apparently found me slumped in a corner in the centre of Southampton on the 7th of January.
As I couldn't remember where I lived they took me to the hospital.

I'd just like to say thank you so much, as if they hadn't found me I'm not sure what would have happened. I have never had that much to drink before, and I will never drink that much again. In fact that experience has made me think about how much money I waste on alcohol, and has made me focus much more on my course and on my sport.

Thank you once again.

NOTE - we found this man slumped in a side-alley at 0230. He was vomiting, cold and unaware of his surroundings. We called the first responder paramedic, who was able to make an assessment and requested the ambulance - street pastors don't actually take people to hospital. This is an example of the great team working for the public in Southampton - door staff (Licensing Link), police, paramedic, ICE bus and street pastors, with CCTV control room helping coordinate.

I will donate £1,000

The manager of the Square Balloon has recognised the valuable work done by the street pastors every week, whatever the weather.

He has offered to donate £1,000 towards the running costs of street pastors.

THANK YOU!

What a wonderful service you provide

Dear Street Pastors,

I came across the service you provide for the very first time last night - me and my friends had been out drinking and were walking back through the centre of town, some of us with no shoes on. A lovely lady street pastor approached us and asked if we would like any flip flops as there was some broken glass further down the road. She asked if we needed any help with anything else.

I asked her why she does this as a volunteer, giving up part of her weekend to help drunk people who have brought it on themselves. She replied that everyone deserves help when they need it, no matter why and she has children our age who she hopes people look out for when they are on a night out.

I had to email and let you know what a wonderful service you provide. So many people, especially the media are so quick to judge 'young people these days' with their binge drinking habits. Yet you are the ones who are out there making a real difference, giving up your evenings to help without preaching to them and no doubt saving the NHS and ambulance service alot of time and money just by giving things like flip flops out.

I hope you receive the recognition you deserve and you have also inspired me to volunteer, something I always wanted to do but never found time for.

Thankyou again!

Becky

My sincere thanks to you all

I would very much like to say thank you to the street pastors for being around in Southampton when my daughter had had her drink spiked.

Thank you for staying with her till I arrived and also pointing me in the right direction of the ICE bus and thank you for giving her friend some flip flops.

I really do appreciate what you did and it is lovely to know that there are people like you looking out for the young people of Southampton.

Hopefully she will have learnt by all of this and it won’t happen again.

My sincere thanks to you all.

That's the safest I have ever felt in Southampton

This is a comment someone said to their friend who is a street pastor.

My daugther is a student who has been away to study in another city.
She came back to Southampton for the holidays.
After spending a night out in the city centre with her friends she remarked to me:
"That's the safest I've ever felt in Southampton"

Lovely to see caring people out on the streets

I had an email this morning from a member of the public who saw us out on Friday...

Hi,

I picked up your card whilst out with friends on Friday night.  Whilst I didnt require your services (but was curious about them) it was lovely to see caring people out on the streets looking out for those who find themselves in difficult situations.  I'm sure its not an easy job - especially judging by the crowd that were out this Friday, so I very much admire you!

Keep up the excellent work.

Kind regards,

Kishi
